Miss Vietnam's ode to traditional drama

Miss Vietnam 2006 Mai Phuong Thuy this month will publish her new photographic book Phu Nu & Tuong (Women & Tuong), to rekindle interest in tuong theater.

Thuy said the book was part of her charity mission after she was crowned Miss Vietnam.

Thuy researched tuong (traditional drama) in libraries and by meeting with artists.

“Women & Tuong” has three sections.

The first part has photos of artists performing on stage around Vietnam by photographer Hong Nga.

In the rest of the book, Miss Vietnam is made up by designer Viet Hung to look like a traditional tuong artist.

In the second part Thuy models traditional tuong costumes and masks used by women artists for photographer Le Thanh Hai.

The third part, by photographer Ly Vo Phu Hung, focuses on tuong makeup.

Thuy models original masks for more than 100 characters.

It will be exhibited at the three-day Tay Son – Binh Dinh Festival from August 1 in central Binh Dinh Province.

Thuy will use the money from the 200-page book to support struggling tuong artists.
